IH 674 Power Steering Problem

Well, finally got my fuel problem fixed and now have I have a power steering issue. The pump/valve unit underneath the steering wheel has been leaking (not too bad) for a while. This weekend it started pouring fluid. I moved last year and can"t find my manual. I"m assuming it has seals that are shot. The bottom bolts are tight, but the outside shell will spin. With the engine off, you can turn the steering and get fluid out of the unit.

Is it better to try to rebuild? Buy a new unit? Buy a rebuilt unit? Where is the best source?

Thanks in advance.

i had the same thing on a 1566 where it is leaking there is a large rubber that needs replacing, its the piece under your arrow about an inch wide, there is a series of spring loaded viens inside, remove unit from tractor and dissasemble on work bench , not too complicated

Hi Floridaboy, what was the solution to your fuel problem?

Now PS Unit, below is from Bernard who has many years experience on this model of tractor:

Hi TDK, on the 574 tractor, like 74 and 84,85,95 series, it's a Danfoss steering valve. You have to remove the valve from the tractor and open the valve to change the seal. Some parts inside have to be timed, so if you haven't opened a Danfoss valve before, good luck. Best way, take the valve to a CaseIh dealer and ask to change the seal. To install the seal, you need a special tool. Be careful when you remove the steering wheel, don't bang on the shaft with a hammer, remove the wheel with a puller. I have done many seal changes when I worked for CaseIh dealer.

My advice is do as Bernard says.

Thanks Jim. Very good advice. I'll try to get removed and take to a Case/IH dealer for seal replacement. On the fuel issue, after changing filters, bleeding and pressurizing tank, finally got cranked. Ran good for a little while, but started the same symptoms. Turned out that the assembly above the fuel filters was clogged with black slimy stuff. Took it off, cleaned with gas, blew out with air and reinstalled. Seems to be ok now. Thanks again. I'll update when I get the steering issue fixed. It may be awhile. The tractor is on our property about 50 miles from home. No real rush now that mowing season is done and our winter grass (deer plots) have been planted. Have to get her fixed by the Spring though.
