IH model 39 plow

Just picked up an IH model 39 plow. Have a few questions about it. First, it looks like it came with 16" tires, but the left rim has been cut, and a 15" rim welded on. Was there some reason for changing this side to a 15" tire? I also have another parts model 39 plow, and it has 15" tires on it. Is there an advantage whether to put 15" or 16" tires on it? I have a 7.50-16 rim and tire off of an IH binder, and this rim looks identical to the original 16" rim on the plow. Or, I have the 15" rims on the parts plow, so could use either size. How late were these plows built? This one still has some red and blue paint on it, so it must be a later one. Did they work okay? I have 20 acres of hay to tear up next year and was thinking of using it for that. Thanks in advance for any info!!!!!

No difference, the system is adjustable to make up the difference. It was probably a convenience thing, 16" have been unpopular at times. Put a mud and snow tire on it to get a grip for lifting the plow. 20 is about all you will want with it, but it will be fine. JimN

The #39 plow is not a ground lift using a tire for traction; the plow is a two-way and rolls over itself to reverse direction.
I have one and also used one while growing up on a flood-irrigated farm. Didn't want any dead furrows in the field so used two-way plows to go from one side to the other.

wayne: If it's not a ground traction lift, would you kindly explain what lifts it. I never used one, however I saw one operating at a plowing demonstration. The operator was pulling a rope to lift or lower it. He later e mailed me a photo of his 39 and Farmall H. Only connection I can see between tractor and plow is the hitch and the pull rope.

Hugh,
It's been a while since I watched one work, but as I recall Wayne is correct that the rotation of the tires does not power the lift. I believe it is the rotatoin of the subframe that does the lifting.

Pulling the rope releases the subframe, allowing the ground force against the plow bottoms to cause it to rotate 1/2 turn. The rotation raises the plow while bringing the opposite set of bottoms into place for the next pass down the field.
