Farmall 400 - shaving the head?

A friend of mine has recently purchased a Farmall 400 and we're rebuilding the engine and trying to achieve somewhat more horsepower than stock without going too crazy. We are intending to have the head planed and we're wondering how much we can have taken off before we either run into clearance issues or we affect the soundness of the head? Many thanks, Sam

Take off no more then you have to to true it up as who knows how many times it has been milled before . If ya want to make more power then install high alt. pistons for above 8000 ft. will give ya more then you will get off the head. Then redo the dist and keep the timing curve at no more the 27 degrees BTDC . Add a 450 gas manifold and tweek the carb.
