Super M Controls

I just acquired a pretty nice Super M serial 26260 J (what's the J for?), which makes it a '53. I bought an operators manual off eBay, a real honest to God IH one no less which has promptly confused the heck out of me as far as the controls go...

To activate the starter you step on a little lever which then pushes button that energies the starter. Pretty much what I've seen on most regular Ms, but in my operators manual it shows the use of a pull rod, not the foot operated setup. It also shows the choke lever and the belt pulley lever all in the same bracket as the starter, which is not how mine is setup. The choke is above the starter button and I think the belt pulley lever (not installed at the moment) is on the right, not on the left.

It also has the later style spring/friction throttle, not the toothed one and it has the sealed beam style lamps.

I does have a belly pump but it's nothing more then a reservoir as it's had a live pump installed.

Also kind of interesting, the PTO lever is either some sort of aftermarket or homemade setup. Instead of the rod that you pull up you have a lever under the seat with a nob and all that pulls the rod up. It's pretty slick, you don't have to hunt for it at all, it's right there, very easy access.

I know the Super M was really a transition model, just a stepping stone to the 400, was there just a lot of variation with in the model?

thanks,

K

EDIT: I should also note that the CNH online parts catalog doesn't show controls like my SM, they show the ones like I fine in my operators manual.

(quoted from post at 16:30:21 11/02/08) J in the serial # means Rockford Clutch. I believe M&W made a PTO lever that was easier to use.

Ah, thanks for the J tidbit. I've heard that M&W made an after market PTO lever but I have never seen one. That and this one looks like it could be homemade or aftermarket, super simple, I like it either way.

Thanks!

Yes, there were variations in the super M. The first is known as a stage 1, which I believe you have. Someone else will probably step in with more detail about the different stages, but here is what I know.

The differences between the M and the stage 1 super M was a larger 264ci engine as well as faster reverse and 2nd to 5th gears. I don"t believe the stage 1s came from the factory equipped with a live hydraulic pump. Then came the stage 2, the following features were added to the stage 1 features; factory equipped with a live hydraulic pump, hydraulic reservoir under the gas tank. Finally came the stage 3, also known as the Super M-TA.

Sounds like you have a operators manual for a SM serial number 28175 or higher which had several changes compared to ones below the serial number. Choke, starter and belt pulley operating rods in the same bracket was part of the changes. Louisville SM serial 504802 and higher also included.

I did know about the different stages, I just though it was funny that my manual cover both Stage I & II but showed the same controls more or less for both (hydraulic being the big difference).

Maybe they had parts left over. :p

D Slater,

That makes sense. The manual does show both stages though, that is tractors with live hydraulics and those with belly pumps.

Do you suppose CNH's parts books reflect the same thing? Just expect that if you run into the older style you would know enough to look back at an earlier tractor?

Thanks,

K

SM and SH both had sealed beam lights. The PTO lever is M&W if it has a 1/2" steel rod like a bellcrank attached to the platform with a flat plate and uses the same rubber knob as the shifter. If not, it might be home made. JimN

I think what you have is a tractor with some nice aftermarket pieces. Some of the controls that IH put on the H and M looked and worked like they were held over from horsedrawn implements. M&W made some good bits to replace them.
