Help settle an argument.

While rebuilding a 6 volt generator from one of my H's, a quasi mechanic stopped by to visit. I remarked that when finished I would hook the F terminal to the neg. battery post and ground the case on the pos. post and if it "motored" it should be functional. He said that was wrong, that didn't mean it would generate when mounted. Am I correct or is he?

YOURE BOTH WRONG.....but hes a bit more right then you are, read on:

First of all (where youre wrong), To run the "Motor Test" you apply voltage TO THE ARMATURE TERMINAL AND CASE GROUND NOTTTTTTTTTTT THE FIELD TERMINAL.

HERES THE CORRECT COMPLETE MOTOR TEST AND IFFFFFFF IT PASSES BOTH PORTIONS IT WILL MOSTY LIKELY CHARGE

1) First jump the FLD post to case ground,,,,,Apply battery voltage to the ARM terminal and case ground, IF IT SPINS NICE N SMOOTH N EVEN AND THE ARMATURE ISNT DRAGGING THE FIELD POLES the Armature and Brushes and Bushings are likely okay........

2) With it running unground the FLD post and it should speed up some,,,,,IF IT SPEEDS UP SOME THE FIELD WINDINGS ARE LIKELY OKAY

3) If it passes BOTH TESTS it ought to charge.

Got it???????????????

John T. Thank you!!! I didn't have my notes with me at the shop and obviously didn't remember what I had read correctly. Will do the correct testing tomorrow.

Youre Welcome Doc, The tractor DC Generator is also a DC Motor as it appears you"re aware, so if it will perform one function it ought to do the other. Spin it and it cranks out DC voltage but apply DC voltage and it spins AINT ELECTRICITY FUNNNNNNNNNNNNN

John T: I have developed a passion for learning about the electrical systems of these old tractors, but guess I'm too dumb to retain what you and others have tried to teach me. Surgery is a no-brainer compared to this stuff. By the way, found my notes and fortunately you were kind enough to help me because the notes I have were very incomplete.

I have printed out a copy of John T's generator troubleshooting procedure and it is tucked in the pages of my I&T manual for IH letter series and Cub. The man is a master of the mysteries of the externally regulated generator.

I know I saw it recently but like a dub didn't print it out to put with my other hard copy reference material.

How do you determine the Field terminal and the Armature terminal with an ohmeter?

If you want to do the motor test which battery voltage goes to which if you are 6V pos ground?
