I have a 1941 Farmall A and the carb is a Zenith 161x7-9752. It was rebuilt but I have problems with the very bottom of the carb leaking. The plug is not leaking and the gaskets are all good with no leaks. I wonder if the float is set to high or if any one knows please help.

thanks,

I had a Zenith carb from one of my C's that had a hairling crack in the body. We didn't notice it until we let it sit on a metal workbench overnight. Gas all over the workbench. A new carb fixed that. I used to have problems with that carb leaking once in a while and the gas would just run out of it (different problem). Sometimes it would leak and sometimes it wouldn't. That got resolved once I replaced the carb.

Float adjustment, float sticking, debris between the float needle and seat would all be suspect.

Is this with the tractor just sitting that you get the leak? Too much choke for too long could also cause what you describe. An otherwise good-running 113/123 won't take but a turn of two of full choke at 1/3-1/2 throttle, and little if any after that, to start.

The tractor has not even been started yet. I just put gas in the gas tank and opened the shut off valve and the bottom of the carb was leaking.

Definitely sounds like a float problem, then. One thing I left out was a bad (as in leaky) float as a possibility. Adjustment, sticking and loose crud are more likely, but that's worth checking out if you;r going to have to open it up anyway.

On the chance that it's just stuck, you might try rapping (NOT smacking!) on the bowl with a small, plastic face hammer or the butt-end of a heavy screwdriver before taking it off or opening it up, which might free it up if it's just stuck. Depends on what it's might be sticking on, you might end up opening it up anyway to reset or trim the gasket, if that's the problem.
