Gas to Diesel?

Can someone tell if the gas start on a diesel has all the gas
componts, carb? plugs? elec? etc.....
I have old gas AC, MM, JD and IH.
I also have old diesel JD and Oliver. The gas I have to tinker with to
keep them running good, the diesel just keep on trucking no
problems.
I would like to buy a diesel IH MD,400D, or 450D. But if I'm going
to have to tinker with the gas part of it, I will have bought myself
nothing. Thanks for any info that will help.

If they start and run as designed, the are pretty bullet proof. They do have all the components of a gasoline engine, except they are uase for only a few minutes a day. They also start very easily. Can actually be hand cranked. JimN

There are a lot of gas start diesel fans on this site but to me they are sort of a Rube Goldberg apparatus. IH dropped them about 50 years ago and as far as I know no other tractor had them.

Back on the farm in the 50s I plowed with a MM that started on gas and ran on diesel or kerosene or whatever. Long time ago and I've slept since then. David.............

I had a 400D and a 450D, they always started good even in cold weather. I always switched them back to gas and ran it for a few moments before shutting them down.

Gotta move up to the 460, 560, 660, 656, 706 to get away from gas-start diesels. And those have glow plugs.

706 German diesel, 806, and newer were direct start diesels.

They have all the components EXCEPT for a throttle on the gas side. They are either on or off when on gas. Carbs are relatively simple but rebuild kits and spark plugs are $$$$. When running good they run cheap. You'd probably be better off with a 706 or something else as the others have said.

I have a neighbor with a 460D. He says it was hard to start when it was new and still is. He said that when he first got it, he had it worked on several times to improve the starting and it never really improved it much. If he pull starts it the Spring, it will generally start after that. Once it"s good and warmed up, it sure runs great though.

I have MDs. They have the same set up on them as all the other gas start diesels and if you want a user then stay away from them because the parts are very expensive. Also they a very tempermental they are very prone to cracking the heads in them if not run correctly. Find one that runs right and works good if you do buy one not may people around anymore that know anyhting about these. A lot of fun but a lot of work too. Good luck and be prepared to pay a high price for a good one.
