How do I operate the PTO on an International B-414?

How do I engage and disengage the PTO from the engine on a running B-414 tractor? Pushing the clutch doesn't allow me to engage the PTO without forcing it into gear and causing lots of grinding. I have to shut down, engage it with the lever on the left side of the operator and then restart the tractor. I can disengage it while running using the lever but have to kill engine again to re-engage it. It doesn't stop when I push the clutch. How should this work under normal conditions?

Hi Roger, as Gary said pushing clutch to running board doesn't stop PTO then you have to adjust clutch to spec or adjust the fingers on the pressure plate thru inspection hole of bell housing.

Thanks to both. I will try adjusting the clutch. Does anyone know the specs on this adjustment? If not, I will just have to try different settings.

Hi Roger, in the resting position there should be 7" from top of foot rest to bottom of clutch pedal foot pad. This is adjusted by set screw by steering arm. The free movement is 1/2" and that is adjusted by loosening the two bolts on clutch pedal and rotating clutch shaft with wrench.
We had 434(newer model of B414) back in the 1970s and we had the same problem getting the PTO into gear and adjusting the clutch didn't help. The problem was the pressure plate finger adjusting bolts had worn a groove into the finger and by turning the adjusting bolts 1/4 turn the bolts were no longer in the worn groove and it fixed the problem.

Hope this helps
