Jim: Researched gear lubricants and if I interpreted correctly, I found that A W 68 Hydraulic fluid can replace the GL 1,2,& 3 in antique tractor transmissions and rearends. Does this sound correct to you? Thanks.

It can replace the fluid and will probably be OK, but there are issues of operation that do not bode well for the swap. The Hydraulic fluid is (usually of less viscosity, and is often not EP rated, though some may be.
80-90 GL4 EP rated lube has a very stable thick viscosity that assists in slowing the gears when shifting. (especially from neutral into any gear).
It also is formulated with extreme pressure additives which help keep the gears from actually touching under stress. The last reason is that the GL4 will be quieter in operation as it absorbs more sound. I hope this helps, Jim

Jim: Thank you. Your reply clarified the difference between the two. The author I read mentioned that some modern tractors used hydraulic fluid in their transmissions so I made the leap and assumed if it will work there, it will work as well in a parade tractor. Taking your advise from yesterday, I bought some GL 4 and filled the transmission with that. Again--Thank you.
