OIL in rear end H Farmall

how to check oil level in rear end on H Farmall???

Level plug is on the left side of the tractor down below the clutch pedal area.

Cant find my user manual for the H. Havent looked at it for 3 years so of course when needed cant find it.

If you have never done it. You might want to think about changing the oil in the rear end. If you havent its a good bet the previous owner never did ether.

The drain hole is under the draw bar at the rear. It holds 11 gal of I think 90wgt oil.
Dont put hytran in that one as she will leak.

I thought 11 gallons was alot until I got my 706. Yikes!!!

The H holds 6 gallons, the M 13.

What does the SUPER M hold?

I recently got this Super M and noticed the rear end grease contains water (looks foamy). I plan to replace it. I noticed that because there was a leak where the pulley housing bolts on, and that is where the oil was leaking and looked foamy. I tightened the loose bolts and the leak stopped. Now I wonder how the water got in there???? It may have come in under that loose part. But I wonder if it leaks in at the shifter. I had the shifter out because it needed to have some welding added, or it would not shift properly. That's fixed. But there really is no actual seal to keep water from getting in.

A farmer told me to use a piece of inner tube and hose clamp above the boot. That makes sense, but where else might water get in? There are no other loose bolts or the filler plug. At the cost of the fluid, I dont want to contaminate it again. Plus water in there will freeze in winter and I can imagine what a mess that would cause.
(My former Farmall H has an identical shifter and it never got water in it).

When I change the fluid (oil) should I flush out the housing? How?

Finally, the filler cap has a square hole. I think it's a 3/4 inch. Do I just use a 3/4" ratchet or breaker bar? Since I dont have 3/4" tools, will a 1/2" bar work with an adapter or are they very tight?

The check plug is on the side on the transmission case. It holds 6 gallons of 80-90 gear lube.

Super M holds 13 gallons. Probably comes in around the shift lever. Some people drain the contaminated oil, put in kerosene and drive it for a few minutes -- I have not tried that. As for the filler plug, if it is 3/4 inch a 3/4 breaker bar or an adapter on a 1/2 will work. Sometimes if I can find a square rod, it use a wrench on that. It may or may not be tight, but as long as whatever you are using fits (that is important) it will come out.
