2424 Brakes Leaking Hi-Tran - how to fix?

One of the brakes on my 2424 is leaking fluid - I assume oil from the transmission, out through the boot on the brake housing. It looks like the brake housing comes off easy enough, but how difficult is it to replace whatever seals are shot? I have a parts book and the IT manual and don't see where the seals are, how to replace, or even what the part numbers are.

Here's a drawing from the CNH site showing the seals, # 14, inside the bull pinion bearing cage, # 12.

Thankfully, I've never had that problem with my 424, but it sure looks like the cage has to be removed to replace the seals. Apparently, there are shims involved, so pay attention when disassembling it.

Make sure the bearings are not worn/loose so the shaft can move around, affecting the seals.
 

Thanks Bob. I'll try to match these numbers up with the parts manual to better figure this out. I have a feeling its going to be a job.

I had the same problem with my 424. It is a big job, not that difficult, just time consuming. When you take the brake housing off you can see the seal but you must remove the hydraulic housing under the seat and remove the bull pinion gear in order to remove the bearing cage. This entails removing the axle in order to remove the pinion gear. The parts are heavy so it is good to have some help at least when you are putting it back together. Depending on which side is leaking you may have to remove the pto shaft in order get enough room in the transmission case to move the bull gear and pinion gears. The IT manual should help but it is not completely clear how it all comes apart.Good luck.
