340 PTO gear

I was repairing a leak where the transmission driven hydraulic pump on my 340 is mounted. When I pulled the mounting plate off, I noticed that the gear on the pump had one tooth chip. I then noted that the PTO gear has a tremendous amount of play. From looking at the parts diagram, I am assuming that it is a bad bearing and race where the shaft sits. The question, I have is can this be replaced without splitting the tractor.

In answer to your question, no. Play could be from various things in addition to what you mentioned. The culprits could also be worn teeth on the PTO gear and and the constant running shaft, as well as wear on the mating surfaces of the constant running shaft and the clutch pressure plate. So odds are to go through the whole drive system of the PTO/Hydraulic pump and in order to do that you have to split the tractor between the engine and the torque tube, and split it again between the torque tube and the transmission.

Hope this helps you.

I was afraid that you were going to say that. I was just reassembling the tractor after a new paint job. ARRGH! Oh well, it is what it is. Thanks.

Check to see if the retainer bolt on the pto/pump drive gear is tight. The bolt that goes in the end of the shaft. Mine has an annoying habit of loosening up, allowing the gear to float.
