why low ash

bunghammer: Older as in what year? Also IH what, gas engines or diesel engines? As I recall low ash was recommended for 06, 56 and 66 diesels, however I was not buying gassers in that era, thus I have no idea what was recommended for those. Most folks with those diesels changed to 15W-40 when it came about. I don't see ash mentioned on modern oils, guess it's all low ash today. By the way I did burn the same low ash oil in my car, 4 trucks, 5 gas tractors and 4 diesel tractors, even my 4 cycle lawn mower. My engines lasted longer than average between rebuilds. Low ash must have had some benefit.
 
It is my brothers 806 gasser. When he bought it the guy said that this is the only oil that he ever ran in it. He ran a low ash 30w. Should we just keep using that in it? What about in the winter time? It gets damn cold here, and 30w seems a little thick.
 
The low ash oil should be used in all the I H gasser from the late fiftys on up till they quiet making gassers unless ya want to spend your time pulling the head off and regrinding or replacing exhaust valves . The low ash keps deposits from building on the valve and tourching a V shaped grove wright thru it and it will happen so fast ya can not believe it BTDT.
 
bunghammer: Every oil that was made back then as single viscosity 10, 20 or 30 weight is being made today as 15W-40, and that is what I would go for.

Way back when 560, 656 and 1066 were new, I was using low ash 30 in summer and 20 in winter. When multi grade was introduced, I switched all my vehicles to low ash 15W-40. This included car, trucks, gas tractors, diesel tractors, even my 4 cycle lawnmower.
 
Low ash is primarily for diesel applications. The low ash oils absorb teh unburnt carbon from combustion.

Well i don't know about that as diesel engine oil is a high detergent oil . And just go ahead and use it in a newer I H gasser and it will do a good job of cleaning the exhaust valves. Low ash was first made for LP engines . Have you ever read the tech sheets that I H sent down to solve problems ?? i have and have you ever sat down and talked to OLD I H mechanics and picked there brain here again i have and any chance i get to talk with older guys about problems and learn i will. I have twisted wrenches way past 45 years and still learning .
 
Hugh the low ash is for gassers only and for the diesels the no.1 oil is for the diesels only. And on a gasser ya MUST USE the low ash to keep deposits from forming on the exhaust valves as they will torch a cute little Vee wright out of a Stelite valve faster then ya can believe .The low ash should be used on all the later 4 cyl and 6 cylinders like from the 58 modle's on up thru the 856 gasser . they run hotter and turn more RPM's
 
Vet: Thanks for refreshing my memory, my last gassers were 300 and 130. It was the diesel grade I went to with all my tractors.
 
We have always used IH 30 weight diesel oil - and more recently 15w-40 diesel oil in all of our tractors, trucks, etc. on the farm and have never had a problem.

Those that are burning valves must be [b:ba4a9163dd]really[/b:ba4a9163dd] working those old gassers...
 
Those with the IH gas engines requiring low ash:

Are you using a low ash diesel oil as a substitue?
Is it bad to use diesel oil?
Are you using a low ash gas only oil instead?
Other?

My gas 656 has about 4400 hundred hours on it (might be 4,800 I forget, bought it used about two years ago) and suspect it had burned valves when I got it. Needs a top end and rings soon and curious as to convenient place to get low ash oil.

If I keep running it until it no longer has the power to do what I need (aside for the obvious inconvenience of failure during hay season) what kind of additional damage can I do to it working it with bad valves and bad rings. Sometimes uses 1.5-2 quarts of oil per hour of round baling or disking. Let's just say mosquitoes usually aren't a problem.

I've just been feeding it Walmart's house brand. Thanks for any input.
