HELP! Cannot get magneto timed on 1940 Farmall H !

Cannot get the magneto timed on this H. Took off the housing with the mag drive gear and found out the cam gear that drives the mag gear is on backwards as the timing mark is on the front. You can see it with a mirror and flashlight. Did not know you could put the timing gear on backwards. How can I get it timed? For all I know the cam gear is off a tooth on the crank?? If the cam is lined up with the crank how can I get this timed when I do not know where I am on the mag gear? I am not very knowledgable about setting mags. Help me if you can. Thanks

ASSUMING the crankshaft/camshaft ARE correctly timed to each other, it's not exactly rocket science to get the mag drive gear installed so the mag trips @ #1 TDC.
