head gasket sealing

Just fired up a 200 that needed serious rebuilding. The head was .020 out of flat and has been surfaced back to true. I torqued the head to 65 lbs, and when we fired it up, we got a fair amount of water seepage on the spark plug side. We retorqued it, bumping it up to a bit over 70 lbs, and although the seepage was less, still it was seeping some. I don"t want to get carried away w/ the torque wrench so:
How much can I safely torque it?
What is your best suggestion for sealing the gasket? We used copper coat, but perhaps I should have used something a bit more thick.

Copper coat is GOOD.

Did you chase the threads, then coat them with oil or sealant?

Bull:
The cylinder head torque spec for a 200 is 80 lbs. This is from right out of the GSS-1356 IH Service Specifications book. (This number for the 200 could have been upped from 65, as it was for the Super A.) I'm not saying that will stop the leak, but it will probably help.

yup, sure did... but evidently I was working on erroneous info. I didnt' have an IT manual for the 200, and was working off "c" specs, as I did have a manual for it, and the two were so similar. Had no idea the torque would be that much higher.
Ordered a new gasket, and am going to copper coat the crap out of it. I'll try again Monday and see what happens... 80 Lbs torque might have been all it needed. We'll see soon enough.

When they resurfaces the deck did the get the correct recess for the sleeves. My Super C block had been resurfaced and the sleeves stuck out too far above the block (there is a spec in the manual). This caused the head gasket to leak. At that point I had to either strip the block back to a bear block to get it remachined or machine the sleeves down (which is what I did). If someone in the future overhauls this engine they will cuss me like I cussed the last guy. Roger
