McCormick W4 fuel pump problems

Hello gang,

At Thanksgiving dinner this past weekend I learned that my uncle's W4 is not pumping fuel. He's pulled hoses but not pulled it apart.

I've been looking for an online manual or any info on the internet to no success. I even looked on the case parts catalog website and I couldn't even find the tractor!

I hope to get out to his place this weekend to grab a peek at it. Any insight at all would be appreciated. Even a parts diagram of the pump would give me an idea of what I'm looking at.

Thanks all

Geoff

The W4 does not have a fuel pump. It is a gravity fed system. Start by unhooking the fuel line at the carb to see if you got fuel flow. If you have a good flow, then your problem is in the carb. Check the screen at the inlet of the carb and make sure that isn't plugged.

If you don't have good fuel flow from the line, your problem is in the tank or sediment bowl under the tank. It common for the sediment bowl to become plugged with rust from the gas tank.

I figured that as well but he seemed quite adament on there being a fuel pump.

We'll see when I get out there....

He mentioned there being a push rod moving something back and forth....it just hit me that he may mean the governor, but it has nothing to do with the fuel..... I don't know.

We'll see

Thanks
Geoff

You mention a push rod. I am inclined to think that the tractor is a W12, which has a fuel pump that is operated by a push rod that passes through the block. There could be foreign matter under the suction or delivery valves. Sid.

Yes, some versions of the W-4 could possibly have a fuel pump, especially if they were adapted by another company to use other than a farm tractor, construction use for example. I personally have never seen one, but have a seen a W-6 that was used by the corps of engineers and yes, it had a fuel pump. But it was highly modified, and could very easily be converted back to it original state. I will assume yours is just a plain tractor and go out on a limb and ask, are you sure its a W-4 and not a W-14?
