Farmall H Knocking

Hi all,
A few days ago, my Dad's 1944 Farmall H got a knocking sound, it sounds like it is either coming from the transmission or clutch area of the tractor. It started when my Dad was hitching up to the trailer. While he was hitching the trailer, he heard it knocking. It would stop if the clutch was pushed in. I used the H today and now it only knocks while driving it. What do you think could be the problem?? What should I check??

It might likely be a chipped or broken tooth on the constant mesh gears. If the top one, it can be replaced W/O too much grief. If the countershaft, it is a bit deeper. JimN
 
Had something happen like that on my M. It was the alum throwout bearing sleeve came loose and I also had a few other bolts loose in there. Tightened them all up and no more noise. The clutch pedal was bouncing some also when I had much of a load like going up hill.
 
It wouldn't hurt to disconnect the hydraulic pump to be sure that isn't the source. It's not hard to take the coupling out that is above the inspection plate located just behind the lift-all. This would eliminate the hydraulic pump as the source of noise.

Yep, that "knocking noise" was quite common in the Hs and Ms.

Problem is in the torque tube like has already been stated. Either the pump connector, clutch assembly, or the #1 culprit is usually that driveshaft coupler.

You'll probably have to lower the hydraulic assembly down to get to the bad guy.

It has a M&W Live pump on it and the belly pump is used as a resivior, so the coupling for the belly pump was removed when the live pump was installed.

Thanks, I might drop the belly pump and check the drive joint and I might look in the transmission too. The clutch works fine and the tractor moves fine, just has that "Knocking" noise.
