IH 2150 paint problem

I usually paint my own tractors, but am restoring an O-4 now, so decided to have a retired body man paint all the sheet metal. He has run into a problem though. He has attempted to spray another coat of paint on the side panels and cowl to get a better finish. This extra coat was done 3 days after the original painting, and the pieces were kept in a warm shop for drying during the 3 days. However when he sprayed the extra coat, the paint "bubbled". What did he do wrong? I've used a lot of the 2150 paint, and have never had this problem. Any help to explain what is causing this would be appreciated.

I do not know what causes this but I have experienced it with rattle can paint, good quality rattle can paint. I think it has something to do with humidity?

I've had it happen with spray paint, it only happens if I put on too much paint at a time. If I put on light coats at a time, I don't get bubbles in the paint, but it is tough to keep flies out of the paint!!

Read the instructions on the can. It will say "recoat within X hours or after Y days." Most paint I've used the values are 4 hours and 7 days. 3 days is within that "do not recoat" timeframe.

Enamel paints like IH2150 take weeks to cure. You could still smell the paint curing on Dad's 400 over a month after he painted it. He used IH2150.

With lacquers and enamels, ifyou spray new paint over partially-cured aint, the solvents in the new paint reactivate the old paint, but not uniformly, because some of the paint is more cured than the other.

Your body man couldn't have been much of a body man if he didn't know this. Modern epoxy paints that are sandable and tapeable in 15 minutes haven't been around that long.

If you do a search for paint bubbling you will find what mkirsch is telling you. The IH 2150 paint probably wasn't cured enough. It will probably need to be stripped and repainted. I would use acrylic enamel or the single step urethane with hardener. You need to use a supplied air system when spraying these paints with hardener. I painted a tiller with PPG's single stage paint code 71310. Looked better than when new. Hal
