The primary causes of loose steering on an H probably in most likely to least likely is worn worm/sector gear, worn worm gear bearings, worn upper bolster bearing, and worn out u-joint. Roger

Good luck, I've spent $200 in parts on my H narrow front and it still wobbles going down the road.

I rebuilt the steering u-joint, new bushings and bearings in the bolster, turned the gear 1/2 turn to get new cogs in contact when on-center, and added the lower bolster wedge, along with running 10psi in one tire and 25 psi in the other.

Start with the simple things like the u-joint under the hood, then see if you have the full steering gear that can be turned to less worn cogs.

Steve, I did the same things you did with my H. Mine tightened up some, but still wobbles.
I use the tire pressure trick and that helps a lot. I rarely go over 1/2 throttle in 5th to avoid the problem. I spent too much for poor results.

I"ve heard of guys saying their steering is now tight; wish I knew how to do that. This problem drives me nuts.

LA in WI:

I have found that if I drive on the shoulder of the road and pull against the steering wheel to keep it out of the ditch that I can go full speed... :?

I had the samething with our row crop H. We jacked up the front end and made sure the tires and wheel bearing where tight. Still had the problem. Replaces the front upper and lower bolster bushings and it is nice and smooth now..

My M had lots of play in the wheel when I got it. It would wobble very badly when going down the road. I took the top off the steering gear and found the gear on top of the shaft that goes down to the wheels was loose. I made a recessed washer that would go down over the splines on the verticle shaft and pulled the gear down past flush. Cured all my problems. Bernie Steffen
