Timing an M

Firste of all not wanting to get in an arguement, maybe a discussion, but what is wrong with using a timing light to set the timing on Farmall h and M tractors? I hear lot of discusion about static timing. That was alright when not too many timing lights were around. But I would think, a timing light would take in account the slack in worn timing gears and any other problems advance or things worn out over the years. Timing light also is good way to check advance. Thanks for any info Bernie Steffen

Probably good for checking advance, not much else. Those engines are not that sophisticated.

If you set the distributor or magneto to fire at TDC while rolling engine in normal rotation without using a timming light you are already compensating for slack in the timming gears. Most M don"t have a mark on pulley to show were full advance is.
If you need a exact setting its best to find out if original pointer is exactly at TDC and then mark degrees on crank pulley or use a degree wheel. Also would pay to check distributor if using one, lots of M have the part for full advance setting changed from original.

Bernie - I always use a timing light on my old tractors - primarily because I have a timing light. However for me using the light is also easier and faster than going thru the static timing process.

Where the timing light is really helpful is assessing centrifugal advance operation. Also a timing light will instantly indicate erratic timing caused by a worn distributor and/or timing gearing. (I've seen the light on poor running engines show the timing randomly "dance" as much 15 - 20 degrees around the static timing point....)

May not be that sophisticated but when you get all those little things exactly where they belong they really run great. My M will idle at less than 200 rpm. Purr like a kitten. I fixed this M up to sell it, can't part with it. Bernie Steffen
