Super A Motor Knocking

I had the tractor running this morning for about 15 minutes then parked it to fix the exhaust manifold and when I started it back up this afternoon the motor was knocking. Sound like it is coming from the number 3 cylinder. Any idea"s?

I'd pull the head then the pan. Could be valvetrain, crank, rod, piston pin etc. depending on where it's coming from.

are you missing a washer or nut? sounds to me like you poked something into the intake holes and it"s gotten past the valves and in a cylinder.

Mark is on track, even carbon in the system can fall into the cylinder and make it have mechanical interference. Putting an exhaust pipe on it can knock rust into the cylinder. Pistons come very close to the head flat areas. If it does not go away, or is very loud, I would pull the head and see what fell in. If it starts to go away in 3 minutes it is probably carbon. It might just fix itself. If it stays put, pull the head. JimN

I'm with Jim on this; very good chance it's just a piece of carbon which will quickly blow out the exhaust. mike

we had a SM that lost a screw out of choke in the carb. We found screw inbeded in top of piston. It sounded like a loud knock.
