Difference Between 826 and 856

My father in law just asked me if I knew the difference between an 826 and an 856 Farmall. I guess his Dad had one and now my father in law can"t remember which model he had. All he knows is his dad always talked about it having a "German diesel" engine in it.

I know a fair amount about 40"s and 50"s Farmalls from working on them, but I"m not very familiar with newer, bigger stuff like this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The biggest difference is the engine: The 826 had the 358ci "German" diesel. The 856 had the 407ci American diesel.

Styling wise, the 856 has the IH grill emblem at the top of the grill. The 826 has the emblem centered in the middle of the grill like a 756.

There's supposedly a story to the reasoning behind the 826, but the only reason I can find is that it was supposed to be a budget-priced 95HP tractor to compete with the John Deere 4000.

I was told the 856 custom was IH's answer to the JD 4000. It only had one hydraulic outlet and a smaller fuel tank for sure, don't know if anything else was different than a regular Farmall 856. Lee
