F12/F14 transmission question

I have a F14 and have a transmission question. On the right side of the transmission right below the belt pulley is a big castle nut with a cotter key and oblong washer behind it on the outside of the transmission. What is this for and how do you adjust it and should you be able to turn the shaft and nut from the outside? Thanks, Hank. 785-748-0061.

There are two castle nuts with cotterpins on the right side of the tranny. The top one is the shaft that holds/supports the shifting forks for the gear shift lever. The bottom one is on the transmission shaft that holds the reverse, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. The nut you are referring to holds the shaft in place. The other end is held in place by a bearing locking plate on the inside of the transmission. I have never adjusted one and I think, I say think, you would be able to turn it (the shaft) if the gearshift was in neutral and the rear wheels were off of the ground, because this shaft has the gears in constant contact with the differential case. If this isn't confusing enough, call me at 636-240-3313.

Oooops! I think I gave you some wrong info. That castle nut you are inquiring about is directly across from the PTO shifter. I've had the tops off of all 4 of my Farmalls and I don't recall what that nut is for. And I can't find any pictures that fully describe all of the shafts and gears in the tranny. Apologize for the bum info.
