Ceramic Resistor on an H

I have a 1951 H that has a ceramic holder with a coiled resistor wire in it mounted across two terminals of the coil. What purpose does this serve? Is it part of a conversion to 12V? There is no battery in the tractor, so I'm not sure how to tell if it is still wired for 6V, or was changed to 12V.

Could sure use some help.

Never saw one like that. It is supposed to be between the starter button and the + terminal of the coil, provided it was converted to 12 volt and has an alternator (negative ground). If it has a 12V generator, it can be + ground. If it has an alternator it is very likely 12 volt.

It should be in series from the wire coming from the switch that has 12v then going to the pos side of the coil if the system has neg ground

If its now 12 volts (and especially if it has a 6 volt coil) I agree with Old, its likely an ignition ballast resistor that reduces the 12 volts coming down from the ignition switch down to 6 volts for the 6 volt coil. I call them the "bathtub" type they are white/cream porcelain/ceraimic units with a wirewound power resistor inside and are around 1/2 x 1/2 x 2.5 inches or so and would measure around 1.25 to 1.85 ohms or so between the terminals. They wire in series after the ignition switch but before the coil, piece of cake......

Can you tell if its a 6 or 12 volt coil and a 6 or 12 volt genny etc??

My Farmall H never had one of these resistors. It was a 12V system. However, the coil was a 12V coil from a Ford car. I guess the resistor is not needed if the coil is a 12V. Actually for the price of those resistors, a person would be better off getting a used 12V automotive coil from a junk yard.

If the resistor is truly wired across the solenoid terminals, then it is wired incorrectly.

Ignition switch --- wire --- resistor --- more wire --- + on coil
