5th gear problems

I have a 1944 m when i put it 5th gear it jumps out i use a bungey cord to hold it gear while i am driving.Any info on what the problems might be would be helpfull.Thank to all in advance

Pull the belt pulley, or belt pulley delete cover, and look at the splines on the 4th/5th slider. Mine were shot. Doing that gear change is not a bad job at all. You'll really only need help picking up the transmission cover.

I suppose it could be the detent. You can check the feel of that against the gears. Remember, though, that the throw on 5th gear is only half that of the others.

The front bearing on mine was worn out.. It would let the input shaft move around a little..

The 5th gear on those things don't go in very far.. doesn't take much for them to come out of gear.

more than likely there is a weak bering on trans main shaft where the main shaft fits into imput shaft ,remove cover and inspect play on front end od main shaft bearing, trans can be completly disasembled with out splitting tractor to replace bearings
