Farmall 400 questions

Fellas, I need some help. First off, I have an "s" in the serial number of my tractor. What does this stand for? also, is there any source that would tell me all the options for the 400? Like, why does mine have a mag and not a distributor. Was there a standard ignition switch for this model. Did you turn the key on and push a button to start it or was the button a kill switch? Any help would be appreciated.

My Dad's 300 has a key switch that has positions ACC - OFF - RUN - START. There is no starter button. A key switch with a relay on top the starter. I would guess your 400 would be the same. Yours would have had a distributor, but someone could have put on a magneto.

S means your tractor has a TA, and there is "provision" for a 540 rpm independent PTO. So if your tractor has a PTO it is live, meaning that it works with the clutch pushed in. TA equipped tractors could also be had with transmission driven PTO's that were not live. The code for that is R. Your mag is somewhat unusual for that model, although they were options through the 450 series. A list of options (by letter suffix to the serial number) is in Guy Fay's data book, they do not include ignition systems, etc, though.

When a 400 came equiped with magneto ignition a push button switch was used to engage starter, and a on off grounding switch common to H,M and other IH tractors was used. No key switch was used.
