W-4 Serial Number

Hi all, my Dad's 1949 IH W-4 has "W1" stamped at the end of the serial number. Can anyone tell me what the W1 at the end of the serial number means??

Guy Fay's data book does not list W1 in the absence of another letter. My guess is gasoline engine. Does it have a gas engine? In 1949 it probably does.

Yes, I think it has a gas engine, there is no hole in the hood for the starting tank. It has a gas manifold, but the carb is gone. Have not looked at the head yet to see if it is a gas head.

Thanks, I was also wondering, I know a W-4 is not called a Farmall, would it be called a McCormick?

McCormick is on the hood decals, McCormick Deering is on the grill plate, On Industrials International is on the hood and grill palte.

My 1950 W-4 serial number reads W BH- 24577 W1 and it is a gas engine. W4

John The decals were at some point changed. The early 4's had McCormick Deering on the side of the hood,and the later ones only had McCormick. I don't know off hand what year they changed ..Iron

Yes, I'm pretty sure a 1949 would have McCormick decals on it, am I right??
