Winterizing 706 Diesel

Next month I'll be storing my Farmall 706 and have read the section on storing this tractor for the winter. My question is does anyone have any addition advise for winter storage.

My comment would be put it in the dry somewhere, take the batteries our and take them down to you basement or some place that doesn't freeze. maybe place a few glue traps under the fuel tank for mice, but where the barn cat can't get to them. Cover the seat good to keep bird poop off.

Anything I missed?

I just park 'em reasonably close to an electrical outlet, shut the ol' boys off and walk away.

Gene you should not have to take the battery out if the battery is any good to start with.

A battery that holds a charge will not freeze. Only dead batterys will freeze.

Kinda reminds me of my failing old neighbor. He calls me up after a storm to help him start the 300 to push snow. I said leave it set I will just blow out your drive for you.

When I got done I went to help start his tractor. It was dead. I flipped up the seat and the battery was gone. He said someone must have stoled it. Went to the basement to warm up and visit and in the corner I see a 6 volt battery. We never did put the battery back till he was gone 1 year later. We didn't think he should run the tractor any longer. Poor Guy.

I now own that 300 and what memories it gives when I use it. When I was a kid I use to sit on his lap and steer.

In the fall I check my antifreeze to make sure it is strong enough and do like Allan, shut them off and walk away.

i read this idea elsewhere years ago: write down everything wrong with it (or a reminder about a shutoff or other storage item) and attach a copy of that list to the steering wheel. if it is a major repair or concern (drained coolant for example), attach the key to that tag as well. If you must store outdoors, weatherproof the tag so you can read it in the spring.

The only thing I will add is, would be to change engine oil and oil and fuel filters. The advanatage, you get all the dirty oil out before the dirt and carbon settles to the bottom of the oil pan sitting over the winter. Also the oil has acids and contaminants in it that is not good on an engine either. Other than that, I back them in the shed, turn off the fuel, make sure batteries are fully charged and lock the door.

I forgot to mention that the tractor is a 706 diesel. Does anyone have any further suggestions for storing a diesel tractor!
