H farmall steering

Go to the archives. Takes a little time, but the advice that's there is voluminous and accurate. Try slightly different terms: this ain't no Google. Not quick and easy, just methodical-- and the results will surprise you. Oh, yeah-- how do I know this? Have been learning myself (about steering slack and slop on a wfe) from the participants on this forum. Best and most enthusiastic persons you will ever find. Thanks all, esp. to JA Nicholson, Rustyfarmall, Andy Motteberg and all of you that I cannot quickly remember. You are an amazing group! steve e. in Oregon!

We have a 1946 H that had very sloppy steering. I found that the sector gear and worm gear were badly worn and the splines on the shaft that the gear slides on were badly worn. Check your steering parts, if they are badly worn, replace them. Also make sure thar steering shaft bearings are in good condition.

Also, make sure that the front wheel bearings are in good condition and the castle nuts holding the front hubs on are not too loose (do not overtighten either or you will damage the bearings). Just make sure they are tight enough so that the hubs spin freely without any slop. My H had a problem with the front wheels shaking badly when I drove it in 5th and I found that the castle nuts were too loose.

Take the cover plate off the steering box. You'll see how the shaft is held in place with a castle nut and the plug at the front of the box. You might be able to take a lot of the slack out by adjusting those two.
