I need your help to verify my thinking. Description – 47 Farmall H, still 6 volt positive ground, has lights, new ammeter gauge, new wiring, generator and voltage regulator. Gauge works like it should showing charge and discharge. Question – With lights off and key off and ground cable disconnected, should there be a voltage reading between the battery post and battery cable (disconnected)? I think not, but there is. The battery does not discharge; I just checked it out of curiosity

The H has no electronics in it at all. It is pure switches and relays. When the ignition switch is OFF, there should be no voltage at the disconnected terminal. To be sure, it will not draw enough to matter if there is less than 1/2 volt present.
I would suggest hooking up the meter and disconnecting one wire at a time from light switches and ignition, and Voltage regulator (and if they do not remove the draw, reattach them to prevent a mess). Eventually it will go to zero, and all will be well. If your meter is very good, and millivolts are shown, it is possible that no real issue is present. Between the components in an old tractor, and a leak to ground might just be a bit of dirt/ moist enough to carry a bit of electricity. JimN

Thanks JimN. I just remembered the reason I checked it to begin with. I noticed that the knob on the light swith felt warm. It has the original type with a resistor. The high and low lights work correctly. I think the voltage measured 7 volts. The lights had not been connected recently. I put a new wiring harness on the lights, back and front. The switch and resistor looked fine. I will try your suggestion.

You've made a wrong connection on the back of the light switch. I did the same thing not too long ago, and yes, the knob gets warm. Tri-focal glasses and poor lighting will get me into trouble quite often.
