1066 PTO Noise - Update

Measured end of pto shaft to center of hitchpin on baler and it is 15 inches. The book says 16 inches needed. Put tractor/baler in tight enough turn(maybe 40% as tight as a full turn) and engaged pto and got the noise I was hearing in the hay field. Got out to listen and pretty sure it is coming from baler driveshaft. It did shorten up about 2 to 2.5 inches when I turned but didn't bottom out. Still had about 1 to 1.5 inches. I think the conclusion is to lengthen out the drawbar but problem here. My drawbar only has 2 holes up underneath and they are about 8 inches apart. If I lengthened out the drawbar, I'm afraid the pto shaft will be extended too far. Am I wrong? The only thing I can think to do is remove the drawbar and have another hole between existing ones milled into it. What are you guys thoughts?

Trying to get this straight in my mind.

You're operating a 1,000 rpm PTO with the drawbar in the forward/storage position?

That's way too close unless your drawbar has an extended, mounted, clevis type hitch bolted to it.

If the drawbar is just the standard one-piece setup, the under-belly pin should be in the front hole.

Second hole is for storage to allow you to get the drawbar forward and out of the way when using 3-point equipment.

Don't see how you ever got it hooked up that way unless you hooked up the PTO first and then backed into the hitch pin?

Allen,
According to the owner's manual for the baler the distance from the end of the pto shaft to the center of the hitch pin for the baler is to be 16 inches for 1000 pto. On those JD balers and I suppose other brands too, there is an add on piece for the hitch that slides over the tractor hitch and extends the hitch backwards about 12 inches. The ball hitch on the baler then drops onto a pin welded into that extension. No problem hooking up the pto shaft after baler hitched up. Probably about 5 inches that the pto shaft has to be extended from fully compressed to hook it up. If I had put the tractor hitch in the front hole, the pto shaft would have been almost fully extended to the point of coming un-coupled. Does that help you envision my situation a little better. Should of mentioned that earlier. My mistake!

Is that 16 inches to the add on hole, or 16 inches to the tractor drawbar hole?

It should be 16 to 20 inches to the tractor drawbar hole.

Good point! Maybe I am interpreting the book wrong. I will dig into it again tonight. If that is the case, I am a little scared that the pto shaft will be hyper extended.

With the deere equal angle hitch the distance is measured to the hitch hole in the tractor not the hitch pin on the baler. Set the drawbar as you would for any 1000 rpm implement and then install the equal angle hitch and you should be correct. I run a deere baler on a 1086 and that is by the book and it works fine.
