M bolster question

Want to dissassemble the front bolster on my M. I am down to pulling the gear. Is there a trick to getting the gear off the shaft? Once the gear is removed is there anything else to keep the main shaft from going down in order to remove? Thanks for the help.

There is a tapered spline connection between the gear and the top of the pivot shaft. Once the spline lets go the pivot shaft will drop freely out of the bolster.

Presuming you've removed the lower bolster/front wheel assembly, put a jack, some piled up wood blocks or similar under the pivot shaft flange so the shaft does not fall out when the spline lets go.

Note! It'll probably require suitable puller - or a few good hammer licks - to break the gear free on the spline.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I thought what you indicated was how it should go but wanted to make sure. Appreciate it.

bob m has it. be careful, that shaft is heavy!!!. what i do is back the retaining nut off the upper gear, but be sure it still has full threads on the shaft. if you have a good size 2 or 3 jaw puller, you can get it on the outside of the bolster housing, real hard to find a puller that will grab the gear. snug the gear puller up, then give the center bolt on the puller a smart whack with a hammer. it should pop the gear off, and the nut will hold the shaft from falling out.
