H4 Magneto-I need help----------

Found an H4 Magneto in my father-in-law's shop-want to use it. When I tested it, it would put out a 1/8" lazy orange spark. I installed a new condensor, points, rotor, and cap. Now it will put out a 1/8" lazy orange spark. What is next?
Would you suggest a coil, re-magnetize the rotor or what???? I guess I am comparing it to a Wico C Magneto which will put out a blue flame for 1/2". Your suggestions appreciated!!!!

Are you checking it with a solid copper core wire? Does the impulse snap good or is it lazy? The coil can be checked before replacing. I would think if you get some spark, the coil is ok. Get the magnet recharged and maybe try another condenser.

Your magnets may be losing some of their magnetism. The rotor doesn't have anything to do with the magnetism. You can check the magnets for magnetism by touching them with a flatblade screwdriver. They should attract that screwdriver with a lot of effort. The coil may be weak too. Those mags are getting pretty old.

You could have the MagMan rebuild it. Hal

With all due respect El Toro, the rotor, or armature, in an H4 magneto has EVERYTHING to do with the magnetism. The rotor IS the magnet, it is known as a permanent magnet and ordinarily does not have to be recharged.

Pappy, since you replaced the points, condenser, rotor and cap and still only an 1/8" spark, then I would say that the coil is bad.

I'm wondering if we aren't suffering "a failure to commmunicate" While you are quite right about the armature, I read rotor in the original post as being the distributor rotor just under the cap.

That's what I was referring too. It doesn't have anything to do with magetism. Is there a web site where you can view the H4 mag breakdown? Hal

Are the H4 much different than this old Wico when the magnets pass by the coils legs? Hal
