How to identify a 12 volt generator.

I've got a generator that looks just like your standard 6 volt Farmall H or M unit, except that I installed it on an H with a 6 volt system, and the charging rate was sort of out of control. I took it off and installed a known good 6 volt generator, and all is well. The generator in question has no tag except for a "rebuilt" sticker. If I take it apart, what do I look for to positively identify it as a 12 volt?

Maybe hook a couple leads to your voltmeter, hold it up against the belt pulley on one of the h's and check the output?

Because you have both, it is pretty easy.
With the wires disconnected, and a good Ohm meter, the 12 V will have about twice the resistance in both the field circuit (checked from Arm post to F post) and armature circuit Arm post to case ground.
Post the numbers when you do the test, I do not have them at hand. The Arm reading will be very low, but not zero. JimN

I just checked two different generators. The one in question and another one which I presume is good but not yet tested. I checked for resistance across the terminals as well as each individual terminal to ground. I can detect absolutely NO resistance on any test for either generator.

I saw a mechanic hold the generator pully against the wire wheel on his bench grinder. It spun it fast enough for him to test it. Watch the fingers.

Rusty, I am in desperate need of an economical 12v generator for an H. The one I originally had planned, which I bought a battery for, turns out won't fit on an H. So, I've been sitting around wondering what to do.

If it turns out yours is a 12v, and you need a 6v, would you be up for a trade?

Mike, I'm thinking that I may actually have two 12 volt generators. Just as soon as I figure out exactly what I have, and if indeed they are good, I'll get in touch.

That would be fantastic! Right now my H runs off stright battery, so can die at any time. Good thing it's only job at the moment is to hold the garage floor from flying up into the garage ceiling. :?
