looking for more info on some guys who are taking 100's, 140's or cubs and making them to look like smaller version 560's. They are supposedly taking rear axle assemblies off of combines and/or rear wheels and tires and adding to the small rigs. Any help, sites would be appreciated.

William: If I wanted to make any tractor look like a smaller version of a 560, I certainly wouldn't look to combines and offset tractors. Neither the combine or the offset tractor will have live axles. I think someone has been pulling your leg.

I'd take a SC, 200 or 230 and modify 240 sheet metal to fit, it's just that simple. All three have very similar looking rear end, wheels and axles to a 560, just smaller. Even the steering shaft goes down the left side of engine. You could add side chanels along engine. In the case of SC or 200 remove the touch control and use 230 or 240 system.

Having said the above, I can't understand why anyone would do this. 240 and 560 sheet metal is junk alongside SC, 200 and 230. Besides SC, 200 and 230 were all nice looking tractors compared to the 40-60 series. Why anyone would want something as ugly as a 560 is beyond me. I farmed with a 560, but I certainly didn't buy it for it's beauty or styling. In the mid 70s, I was farming with SA, 300, 130, 560, 656 and 1066. 560 was a good tractor, but ugly and sheet metal always rattled, then it would fall off and get run over, this made it rattle worse.

The early 140 and Cubs made at the same time as the 560 had grilles and emblems that made them look similar to a 560.

My view on this has very little to do with beauty. My dad and I bought at least one new tractor, each series, all the way from letter, super letter, 00, 30-50, 40-60, 04-06, 56 and 66. The 560 was a good tractor, however the sheet metal was crap, particularly the fasteners. We listened to that sheet metal vibrate and rattle for 10,000 of the 11,000 hours we put on the tractor. That did not happen with the other 15 Farmalls we owned.

If I were to judge styling and looks, I'd give 1st to letter and super letter series, 2nd to 56 series, 3rd to 04-06 series, 4th to 66 series and 5th to 40-60. The 460 and 560 looked like locomotives, and manuvered just about as well. Six inches longer in wheelbase yet the same wide front steering as 400 and 450. The 04-06 tractor improved some, however none of them hold a candle on manuvarability to 56 and 66 series tractors. As I told a friend about my wide front 656, "It will turn on the same headland as your MF-35, plus I can pull a 5x16 plow." I bet that 656D didn't burn twice the fuel of his MF-35 either.
