Disc brake actuator spring preload

The book calls for a preload of 1 3/16" for the heavy coil springs in the disc brake actuators on my Super H. They are about 3/32" short of that without any tension on the jam nuts. Is this critical or can I just compress them a bit beyond where they are without the preload? Are these springs available?

Tighten them up until there is about one half the current distance between coil wraps. This will make it some what stiff, but the pedal feel is better. The sag after 50 years is beyond new spec. JimN
