404/460 Ute Questions

I am considering selling my 300 Farmall to get something with a loader as well as a lower profile. I"m considering one of the newer compacts, but noticed locally a couple of 460 Utilities with loaders for sale and a 404 with no loader. $5500 and $6000 for the 460"s and $2500 for the $404. The Kubota types seem to be well over $10K with loaders. I am familiar with the 560 Farmall and a 300 utility since we had both when I was growing up, but I know nothing about either of these tractors. What are the good and bad about each? All are gas, but I won"t use it alot of hours and I prefer starting a gas vs a diesel in the winter. I assume the 404 will handle a loader? It also has a 3-point which is both good and bad since I have some 2-point equipment. How do the prices sound for NE KS.Thanks Ron

Well the big thing to pay attention to on the 460s is the steering. They are well known for excessive wear in the steering box, especially if theve had a loader for a long time. However they also have an advantage over the 404 in that they have frame rails along the einge, where as with the 404 the block is "the frame" between the bellhousing and the front end. As far as loaders I have seen several of each model with loaders on em.

Personally Id say go with the 404 cause they are a little more compact as far as length. Also they are newer than the 460. But from what Ive heard they are bit more challenging for finding parts since they are not as common.

But if and when you get a loader for it be sure its one that mounts to the rear axle in addition to the bolster and torque tube so that all the strain is not just on the bolster and torque tube. Otherwise you are more likely to have the tractor in two pieces if someone ever tries to lift something they shouldnt.

Hope this helps you.

Ksfarmmer,

I have a 460U No loader, I think it had one before I bought it. I paid $2800 here in SC WI. Solid all around tractor with a weak TA, 75% rubber. Broken guage said 2850 hrs. Check if there is signs of leakage on the PS pump. All the brass bushings in the spindles were nearly gone on mine plus one front axle tube was welded. My 460U has no frame rails, the block is the frame. I have seen one with a loader bolted to the front of the block area and then again on the trans/rearend. I like mine alot but I also have A green compact utility that is my loader...I wouldn't be with out that one either!

Ya sorry about that when I was thinking of frame rails I was thinking of the 460 rowcrop. The 460 utility does not have frame rails, the block is the frame like the 404.
