I found a 1947 farmall M in a old shed has not been moved for over 20 years lots of water in oil in trans and rearend. The question that I have is can I put regular hyd. oil in in place of the 80-90. I have a 30 gal barrel of hyd. oil and no 80-90. I know that some seals might start leaking but will the thinner oil hurt the gears and bearings in the tractor. Thanks in advance.

its ok to use it as a flushing oil, and run it around a bit but you cant keep it in there. you need the actual gear oil for proper gear lubrication, especially under load.

I don't know the answer to your questions but I've wondered the same thing since the later IH's used hytran in the rear ends with no problems. I guess if it were me I'd go the safe route and run gear oil in it.

Gear surface finish today is so different than the early machinery that putting Transmission rated oil in a unit designed for thicker gear oil is not a good idea. The trans will coast far more than desired, the seals will probably leak, and it will make more noise. They do hold quite a bit of oil, but I would trade my desirable Hydraulic/trans oil for some 80-90!! JimN

Ask a caseih dealer, if they look up, the new recomendations will tell you to use hy-tran. I asked and that is the answer I got.

S2710: Go with gear oil, and heed what Jim has told you. The case hardening on gears improved greatly in the mid to late 1950s. Don't listen to CaseIH, they'd have you using hytran on a steel tired wheel barrow.

the only reason not to use the light oil would be more leaks. the tractors with t/a's use 10 weight oil and the oiling system on a 450 is the same as an m. you will be fine. i have hytran in the pulling m's and they roll easier than with the heavy gear oil.

Randy: The gears in a 450 are not the same as an M and the difference is case hardening. There was a major change in case hardening around 1953-54, all Farmall gears after that date are much harder than older gears, even though they may interchange with the older gears.
