Farmall M Thermostat

Okay, I know this question has been beaten to death before, and I searched and googled.

What I found was posts that said that Thermostat AutoZone part 800-180 fits a Farmall M.

Autozone 800-180 is not a thermostat though. Their nomenclature must've changed. Anyone know of some generic part # that does not cost too much that I can use instead?

Napa THM-28 is $21 plus shipping. And it's not even a 180 degree thermostat, which is what I would like to have...
 
The AZ #800-180 sounds right - though it's been a few years since last purchased one. Seems to me also it fit some 70's era big block Olds/Pontiac engines. But it's been a while...

Anyway suggest you pull the old t'stat and bring it to a parts store. Or if the t'stat breaks apart when you remove it or it is MIA, bring in the t'stat housing. Then find a t'stat with the correct outside diameter flange to match the old t'stat or housing.

Keep in mind the new t'stat will be much shorter than the OEM. However it will fit and work fine (FWIW I now have several H's and M's all with 180 deg car thermostats in 'em now.)
 
If you use the short auto thermostat with the stock gasket it will bypass more than the OEM tall one. I just put in #387533R91 IHC one of 170' that is tall enough to plug the old casting bypass. My temp was up to 170 after 9 minutes of idle and stayed there. I should have done this earlier but listened to internet garbage instead.$32 Canadian for proper temp control without shutters Whats not to love?Good luck
 
So, your advice would be against the short car-type thermostats and go with the elongated one that looks like the original?
 
Ok, AutoZone 800-180 is definitely NOT a thermostat.

However, found one at O'Reilly. It fits perfectly, i have no leaks (red RTV was used to install) and the operating temperature is now 180F.

O'Reilly part # is 3478, made by Murray Plus+.
