113/123 Governor

The governor on my '53 Super C does not seem to function as well as the ones on my B or SA. I've worked on the governor's on H's, but those on the 113/123 engines do not have a side plate to get into them. How does one get into the governor on a 123 engine to check the spring and/or linkage? What do you have to take off of the front of the engine to get a look at the inside of the governor? (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

I am looking at the parts diagram and I don't see a side cover. I can email you a copy of the parts diagram if you need it. My email is open.

You have to remove the governor housing from the front of the engine to expose the governor/mag drive. Be SURE to find the timing marks BEFORE pulling the governor/mag drive out of "mesh" with the timing gear.

Like Bob said, you need to get the whole housing off the front, being careful not to pull the gear off with it, or at least without making note of how it needs to go back. It's one of those jobs where it's often worth the effort to have your motor set up on TDC compression on #1 before you start and not disturb it while the governor is off.

It's lot easier with the hood off. And even easier with the fan and radiator (or at least the shroud) off, but can be done with the right assortment of wrenches without removing those. If you're having trouble with clearances, my view is that it isn't that big a deal to remove the fan, which can gain you a decent amount of working room, if only to swing a wrench to the left side instead of the right.

And watch out when you're bringing the governor out for all the little balls that might fall out of the thrust bearing.

Blast it all. I just finished a writeup on how to adjust the governor, but the vulgarity filter choked on something, obviously not the word screw, but it's now all gone!!!

If you've got problems like:

1. Idle isn't idle, full throttle isn't full throttle
2. Engine surging

These can be fixed externally in most cases by adjusting the governor-carburetor linkage, and the governor response screw on the bottom of the governor itself. Both processes are in the I&T manual.
