Saved an M today

A scrapper called me today, said he had a 1945 M he was scrapping, so I told him Ill take it. He had disassembled it mostly, but everything but the hood and grille was in excellent condition. Engine is stuck, but the block is not busted, has a 9 speed transmission. paid $300 for it all. I figured,, since its all torn apart, good time to restore it. It has a steel gearshift knob,,,,, I think its steel,,, never seen one like that,, It had a 12 volt conversion done to it,,, and it has a weird generator and a bracket thats not home made,,, I have a good spare M engine Im gonna drop in it, so shouldnt be much to get it back on its tires and running!!

It is sad that people are in such a bind that they are scrapping good equipment rather than placing a $10 ad in the paper or on EBAY.

Proud of you, Chad. One more resurrected Farmall keeps the legacy going.

Hey, if that M also has an M&W hand clutch and you want to switch it back, I've only got a couple of dozen left side brake covers on hand, from the conversions that Dad and Grand-dad did back in the '60's...I can make you a real deal on one or all!

Steel shift knob was used when rubber was being rationed in WWII...most were '44 models, but a few '43 and '45 models still had 'em.

The scrapper has a few more too!! But I told him, dont take em in to junk,,,, Ill help ya find people that needs parts or buy the whole thing. I seen a few more M's and H's,,, 2 long dash JD A's, (not stuck but rough) IH B in pieces, oliver 88 with real nice sheet metal but engine is stuck, a burned up 560 gas, but not stuck and savable or good parts,,, IH 806 gas which I knew was a runner 5 years ago,,, narrow front, 3pt hitch. I have to say not so much as a scrapper,, he loves the old machines, and picked the worst one to take in,, which was the one I bought,, the 45 M,, serial number 100749. Turned out, after inspection, it was in real nice shape, and not more than reassembly is all it would take to put the chassis back together, he unbolted everything,, didnt use a torch to remove any thing!! Gears look super, the brakes were replaced at some point and looked great, no rough edges from grinding gears,,, they look grrreat!! Only thing I did not get was the radiator,, he needed it for another project so I said I have one already so no problem. The upper bolster is broke,,, Id say this is why they parked it in the first place,,, probably found a hole and dropped it in and SNAP!! Id love to find a wide front end for it, or put one on my 50 M that I pull/work with. The 12 volt conversion was the thing that got me,,,, someone did a nice job on the swap,,,, and was wondering if any kind of conversion was available aftermarket way back when,,,, because nothing apears to be home made as far as the brackets are concerned. I do have a real nice 300 row crop Id like to fix up or maybe sell,,, also a cub lo boy with a 60" mower deck, looks like a 300-350,,, ran when it was parked but smoked a little bit,,,, dad had rebuilt the engine, but never ran it enough to really break it in. Has live hyd. I had seen one all fixed up and was a nice machine!! Chad

Might make you one heck of a puller someday. It is nice that you know a "scrapman" that is willing to call you. Around here, if they know you want or need something the price goes way through the roof.

Yeah, he is a pretty good fella! Done lots of trading for stuff over the years with him. I am thinking of making a puller out of it,,, I have a M and a SM thats in nice condition that I just could not bring myself to strip down and make one,,, finding tractors in this condition can make it a toss up on which way to go. Either way, it will run again! I am thinking of a 450 ci engine with some good parts. Chad
