A starting problem

As stated in a post below, I just obtained an A (12 volt system) tractor. My mechanic skills are lacking quite a bit & so I am in need of some help. The guy I bought the tractor from said that it started/ran great, then it sat for 9 months due to an illness. When I tried to start it, it took 2 slow continuous cranks before it wnted to fire. I didn't worry too much about it, so I went ahead & got the tractor. When I got it home & tried to start it, it just cranked once & then went dead. It does NOTHING now when I try to start it. The battery is good & all connections are clean. Where do I go from here to track the problem?

could be a number of things. first, check the battery, make sure it is good and fully charged. if necessary, try and use another vehicle and a set of jumper cables, see if it cranks over. if not, you can eliminate the battery. if the cables are good and all the connections are clean and tight, look to a starter problem. i am pretty sure the a uses a saddle mount switch on the starter. could be the contacts are worn. or could be a bad starter.

The saddle switch on the starter is notoriuos for not making connection. They are readily available, inexpensive, and easy to replace. If you have done the above, and the machine still does nothing that is the next logical step.

Starter is probably locked up on the ring gear. I would remove the starter and clean the bendix and then lube it. You mite want to turn engine over with crank when the starter is off so you can see the condition of the ring gear.

Thanks for the help guys! I took of off the starter & had it looked at. The shop said that there was a brush that had broke off & jammed up & ruined the armiture. he quoted me a price of $170 to repair. NOW.. do I get the repair done, look for a used one or just get a remanufactured unit????
