I have a 1949 IH Farmall Cub. When it initially starts I get a lot of white smoke for about a minute. Then it clears up. This started earlier this summer. I suspect water is getting into one or more cylinders. Probably a head gasket issue although I rebuilt the engine 2 years ago and replaced all the gaskets. Why does it stop smoking after a shoet while? Is the heat making the head expand and sealing the leak or could I possibly have a crack in the block or head? I would appreciate others experience and comments on what to check or do.

White smoke is probably oil. Warm up and smoking stops- valve guide/valve stem clearance being reduced when warm or rings/piston clearance reduced when warm to stop the oil burning. Rebuild 2 years ago- how much heavy work has it gotten since then to seat rings? Did you put in new valves and guides or just grind and lap valves and seat? Knurling valve guides -accepted rebuild practice when not replacing guides- reduces oil consumption at startup a bit. Side valves without cup seals can normally smoke a bit when cold- old Harley G trikes and UL, Ks normally had white puffs when cold, Briggs and Tecumseh iron blocks also, Flathead Fords same. check radiator for oil film but probably the crankcase is dropping oil level just a bit- valve guides or a bit of gas indication is ring seating not quite complete when cold. Rings not seating would have some smoke when warm- I would check valves first. RN

This all brings up a good question as well, Is anyone aware of any aftermarket um-brella type seals that are made to install on the top of the valve guides to further help with oil consumption between the valves and the guides ?
