what mower would you guys prefer im looking for a 6 or 7 foot to mow the fields before they get plowed because the weeds are usually 3 feet tall and for just general mowing around the green house what are the pros and cons with either i have a 5 foot brush hog now and its just not cutting it( no pun intended )

The flail gives a smoother cut. It is a happy medium between a rotary cutter and a finishing mower. They do not like stumps, large limbs, and rocks. If the areas are clean with occasional debris the flail is king. Rotary cutters are good for rough cutting and debris areas.

I have a Mott (Alamo) 88" cut flail behind a F504 Diesel (50HP). It does a good job but in real heavy grass I could use 70+HP.

Alamo has a several models. I think the smallest requires 36+HP. This link is for Alamo flail mowers. The Super Heavy Duty is the PTO unit.

This is my Mott (Alamo) 88" flail mower. It needs paint, my project for this winter. It cuts smooth enough I have used it to mow my yard.

I know: The RH fender and belt guard is removed in this picture

I live in the high desert plains of Colorado, East of Colorado Springs. I watch my neighbors on their little riding mowers. (I'll bet they've spent more money on their little mowers than I spent on my M! $3k or $4k!) There is always a cloud of dust behind them, and I think "Well, there goes what little top soil they have." Same goes for brush hogs. What a dusty operation here! So, I have been considering a sickle bar mower. I never even thought of a flail mower. How much dust would that kick up? I want to keep my precious top soil where it is.

Not dusty at all compared to a riding mower or bush-hog. The design doesn't create as much "lift" as a rotating blade.

Here are some pictures of a flail.
