looking at a 504 gas...# on clutch plate on left side is 8680022 I think(covered in new paint)...not sure if hydro remotes work or not yet..but ran thru all the gears seem fine...3pt lift works but untested with a load yet....he is asking $4500...what size plow and disc can this tractor handle...will start farming 40 acres of row crops this yr...anything to look out for pro and con would be helpful....thanks...Bud

I do not know about the number you mention, but on the right side bellhousing there should be a metal tag with a SN (3-5 digit number) and option codes. The gasoline engine has no sleeves, make for an interesting engine rebuild later on. The 504 is rated as a "3-plow" tractor" it has 50 engine HP and 46 PTO HP. The 504 is a good tractor, I say this but I have a diesel.

As for the price, it sounds a little high... I have been watching one on EBAY. 1962, Freeman loader, TA, good condition that started at $7800, it has been relisted many times and the last time I saw it listed it was $4500, one offer, denied... I put a good 504 at $2000-$2500 max.

Good luck,

Charles

Charles, thanks for the info...he is down to $3200 on the price...the #6585 IWY FF is on the plate you mentioned...is the age of this tractor close to a rebuild in the future...hrs unknown..Bud

My dad had a 504. It's a light tractor with out a lot of lugging power due to the small high speed engine. A super M would outpull it any day. It will have trouble with a 8' disc unless it's a light one with smaller diameter/worn disc's. 2 - 16 plow would be all it can handle. Good reliable tractor

Great for front mounted cultivators with live hydralics and PTO. You will need something larger for tillage on 40 acres

Ed1, I am not arguing with you on the 504's capabilities. Just sorting that out first. The 504 is a 3 PLOW tractor, fact. I have never ran a 5 speed gasoline 504, but I am more than confident a diesel TA 504 will pull 3-16's. I know for a fact a diesel 504 will pull a 10' disk all day with loaded tires. I know it can (with a struggle) pull a 4 yard Reynolds scraper in 1st gear (6ft+ cutting edge). The only thing I have seen drag the diesel 504 to its knees is a 5 shank chisel plow in Louisiana clay.

1. The serial number puts it at 1962.
2. There is no I in the list I have, but a J for Rockford clutch.
3. W is for forward/reverse shuttle shift. I would buy a parts tractor just for this item to put on my 504. For using a loader it is invaluable. Buy it, if you find it too small I'll buy it from you later on (seriously).
4. Y is for 12 GPM hydraulic pump.
5. FF is for a 4.5 GPM 3-point/fast hitch pump.

4 and 5 are the most common pump options on a 504. Is this a wide front or tricycle? I would like a picture of the tractor if you end up buying it. Especially the fwd/rev unit. Finally, I'd give $3200 for it without thinking twice if it checks out mechanicaly sound with decent rubber on the rear.
