Super A Flywheel Again

I was going to change the ring gear on my flywheel this morning and I decided to just drive the old on off. When I did that it broke off about half of the the lip around the edge of the flywheel. Any suggestions as to what I should do now?

I did that to mine. It obviously wasn"t sufficiently heated.
I decided that if the ring gear was tight enough around the flywheel to resist moving/spinning against the torque of starting the engine even WITH the lip, it would stay in place.
I"m not advising you one way or the other, or disputing Scott, but it"s been half a year, and so far, so good.

Thanks for replies and I guess by the way it sounds I"m not the first one to do this but would this mess up the balance of the motor at all?

I did like JANicholson said. I took a grinder and took off the rest of the lip that hadn't broken off, and I believe I did it after the ring gear was back on, so I wouldn't go too far.
There wasn't much weight or heft to the lip, and after the grinding, (considering the weight of the flywheel), I think the difference is beyond negligible.

Derrick, BTW, I heated my ring gear in the oven to maybe what? 200 degrees? I can't remember exactly, (opinions, anyone?), and when I ran it out to the garage, it literally FELL on the flywheel to the shoulder, no extra 'persuasion' necessary. It was an "Aha!" moment.

PS:, I did it when the Redhead wasn't home, just in case!

If that would upset the balance of an engine that only turns 14oorpms sure are lots running with no problems. Just remember this aint no Indy 500 engine.

I did the same thing. ground the rest of lip off to make it even all the way around, heated up the gear, and put it on. Started the engine up on a engine stand and had no issues with the vibration.

Don't stress over it. It won't make any difference.
