Farmall M front end noise

Today while working on the M I finally grabbed a stick to find out where the noise in the M was coming from and it sounded like it was coming from under the timing comver. Kind of hard to explain the noise but it almost sounds like gears running against eachother and is fairly loud. Not really a knock. May be a lifter type noise something like that.

Any Ideas? Or cost If I do the work my self?

Thanks

TC - If your M has a live pump the most probable cause is a failing camshaft drive gear. Typically the web between the gear teeth and hub fractures, or the cam gear retaining nut loosens/falls off.

The gear will still drive the cam more or less in time - so the engine will still run. But you'll hear a slap or clunk twice every crank revolution as the gear "flops" fore and aft inside the timing cover.

Repair is straightforward - I've replaced several Super M/400 cam gears. However there's some heavy parts must be removed (entire front end/bolster assembly) to get at the timing cover. Also the nut on the the front of the crankshaft must be removed. The nut is BIG and located in a recess. It requires a 2-1/2" socket - a size not usually in the average M owners toolbox!

However before you tear the tractor apart carefully check also the fan blade/water pump assembly. A loose fan blade or failing water pump bearing can cause ominous sounds at the front of the engine too.

Good luck!

Yea I figured as much. I thought that it could have been the water pump but I didn't hear any noise from that with a sounding stick. Is my best bet to tear into it and fix what needs fixin? or buy parts in advance?

Thanks
