wear on pedals

The wear on the pedals is a very good indicator of the hours (or lack of) on a machine. ..hour meters could have been replaced, or can be unhooked or have broken cables/wires ..the pedals don"t lie

I can agree with pedal wear being an indicator of hours of service. Condition NO. Often times those tractors getting high hours of service got far better maintenence than tractors used very little. I've seen it time and time again, the low hour owner tends to say, "Ah to hell with it, we'll do it tomorrow."

Wear on pedals means little. A tractor used as a chore or loader tractor is going to have more wear from starting and stopping all the time. A tractor used mainly for feild work may run for hours without the clutch pedal even being touched but still have many high stress hours on it.

obviously it depends on where you are. I didn't think about the point that Scott mentioned. Here in Western NY State the fields generaly aren't big enough and flat enough to be able to run that long without using the pedals

To answer your question about pedal wear I feel that it is an indication of tractor use. The more the tractor clutch is used the more the pedal wears. Most Farmall tractors have grease fitting on pedal but it usually does not get greased to much or often. Another item that makes the pedal wear faster is how stiff of spring is in the clutch pressure plate. I repair a lot of pedals by installing a brass bushing in the pedal after boring out the hole and honeing to fit a new shaft. The pedal from a Farmall SMTA, 450 and 560 are always wore the worst. Happy clutching

510 Plows: So you don't think a loader tractor that probably clutches 100 times per hour, would have more wear than a drawbar tractor that might see clutch used 5 times per hour? I know on tillage work, I've gone for hours and never used the clutch.

Since I used to run 7 tractors, my findings are not the same as yours. In my case it was always the loader tractor that suffered clutch and gear shift lever wear. I had a 300, loader on it most of its's 35 years. The bushing was replaced once, however the tread grip on pedal was worn smooth. the gear shift lever was built up several times.

My 560, 656 and 1066 each clocked up well over 10,000 hours on drawbar work with very little clutch pedal wear.
