Dang Auctions!!! Just cant seem to keep my hand down all the time.
Sold my 706 so was on the hunt for my next tractor.
Missed a 1206 with a cab and duals,Rugh looking but a good good runner that went for $4500. just past my budget :(

Then we came upon this 966. Starts and runs good but has a tick in it. Scared because I havent worked on a diesel yet. But the price was just too good to pass up. $3400 with the tick.

Drove her home and every thing works.
Wish me luck.....

Looks like a pretty serious bit of kit. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it. As to not working on a diesel before - everybody has a first time. You already know where your most important tool is so have at her. Sam

Kelly: Well, you finally listened to me, got rid of that damn old 6 cylinder gasser and bought yourself a diesel. I had just about given up on you.

Nice looking 966, tick is quite likely something simple like a valve lifter or rocker arm. Look at the rocker arms. Back when these were new, 966 and 1066 had same rocker arms. 1066s were breaking them, there was a recall and IH upgraded them. I remember the day the dealer changed my 1066, the new rocker arm assembly was substancially heavier than the old. Back then it was blamed on the turbo, by now fatigue could be doing same to n/a engines. Just a thought, I'm no engine expert.

Well I have sure wanted one for some time. This old girl has every feature I need on it.
Was kind of funny. The old gassers like 400,300, 460 were going high. even a a 706 G with a knock in it went for $3600. Wile the High HP stuff was going dirt cheap.
A big ARCO not sure of the model had a reciept for $5000 worth of engine work tapped to the window of the cab. Ran good. I think got about $4000 for it.

Only $3400? Geez. I need to start going to whatever auctions you are going to...

That looks like some nice old iron you have there. I hope you get the noise figured out, and on the cheap!

I figured for $3400 I had lots of wiggle room for fixin.
The cheapest 966 I have seen around here was about $6500 most go for around $8000 +

It really amazes me the prices different parts of the country bring.

In the North East, even with a tick I know that tractor would bring at least 6,000.

You got that thing for what a nice 400 would bring in my area!

Have fun with it, those '66s are suppose to be nice machines.

Does the TA work? How many hours? You can get a lot of money quick into those big ole horses. From your pics it doesn't look bad, good luck.

Just driving it around the yard the TA seems to work just fine. Havent put any load on any thing yet. Not going too until I fix the tick issue 1st.
It has 8200 hrs, if the meter is right. it does turn as it should.
So far the only thing that does not work are the lights.
Even the parking lock works :)
The rear end does howl a bit going down the road.
It did have a cab on it and the draw bar is wobbled out a bit. So it has had some hard pulling in her time.
