Farmall 400 retiming ignition after hyd Pump removal

Hi folks,

Just stumbled upon the site here after turning my shop upside down trying to find my shop manual for my 400 with a Thompson hydraulic pump.

I had to pull off the hydraulic pump for repair and now that its time to throw it back together there's a few loose ends....

I see a mark(two stamped indents) on the hydraulic pump gear but nothing on the crankshaft gear, is this indeed a timing mark or something else? And if it is indeed a mark, to see the matching mark on the crankshaft gear i'm going to have to pull the front cover off, which looks like a lot of fun.

Is there an easier way to go about this?

Thanks all
Geoff

Unless you have a magneto just ignore the marks when you install it.

Separate the distributor from the distributor adaptor. Install the adapter. Turn the engine until you have number one TDC on the compression stroke. Line the rotor up to the number terminal on the cap and install the distributor. Retard the distributor and then advance it until the points just start to open. You should be within a couple of degrees of where you want to be.

I know nada zip zilch zero about a 400, but I can't figure why a hydraulic pump needs to be 'timed', versus just needing to 'go'. I think those indents are just there to mess with your head.
I'll be curious to hear what the pros think.

Thanks for the replies,

The answer is so simple....I guess the slotted coupling in that distributor adapter had me going.

Thanks for your time
Geoff
